Caught the show last nite at the Hwy 99 club. The band was on fire and loaded with lots of great new originals that were as good, if not even better, than the "original" originals!! Great seeing the original horns and guitarist layin it down, and the drummer was kickin it deep down in the pocket. Standing room only all night and everyone was dancin' and jammin' (Just like the band.)

As a composer, business person, community advocate and child of the funk, the Gold was my first live experience of the funk in my neighborhood practicing in the shadows of 32nd in the Mt Baker community. I'd listen to the funky horn arrangements and the perpetual horn section with funky vocals by David Wasson on of my dearest friends and musical mentors. Melvin "nutsy" with horn pops reminiscent of charlie parker, cliff horny horn man, adding a business minded blue eyed soulful trumpet, steve banks on drums "little" self appointed straw boss, his way or the highway, robert gayle with a funky left hand blasting through two leslies, with a right hand as precise as herbye Hancock or chick chorea with a funk twist and a pinoy power percussionist to round out the international funk foundation of the northwest. Cooking Bagg, Onyx, Tamara, Black and White Affair, Contents Under Pressure, Fantasy, The Sly Brothers, David Wasson, the Lewis Brothers, Herman Brown, Tobias Croone, Daryl Lockhart, Gerald Gibson "OMG" my big bro, Vincent Bembry are legendary names in the Pacific Northwest funk scene and I'm blessed to have seen them and in 2015 experience the Gold carry on and revive the tradition of the "real sound" of the 70's that brought black, white and brown folks together with a funk legacy that changed our region forever. My first live experience with the Gold rehearsal process the arguments, the conflicts during a volatile time in our communities with racial tension, economic oppression, police brutality and some more shit, but always showing up to kill it at the gig...., rehearsal "the wood shedding" is what makes the sound tight, and I got a chance to experience the construction of these originals the adjustments to the horn arrangements and the tightening of the sound that shaped the decades of funk music in Seattle, Bellevue, Portland and many other Colleges and one nighters in our area Stateline Idaho, Canada's Oil Can Harry's, The Golden Crown, and more.... many of these legends are gone but not forgotten.
